Toxic Paper Receipts to Be Banned in New York City

Toxic paper receipts are becoming a big concern as they contain bisphenol A, or BPA. Most cash-register slips contain the chemical, suspected of interacting with human hormones to cause breast cancer and brain damage.

Japan and Europe banned BPA in 2001 because of its potential negative health effects on humans, such as hormones, metabolism, and other bodily systems. New York City is following suite.

Council members plan to crack down on the use of toxic paper receipts with a package of laws that will require merchants to offer shoppers emailed receipts or those not coated with the offending chemicals. The proposals would also require all stores and banks that issue paper receipts to use recyclable paper, and large stores and banks to provide receptacles to dump them. Repeated violators would incur fines of as much as $1,000.

In addition, New York City has recently banned:

• foie gras, a French delicacy made from force-fed ducks
• flavored e-cigarettes
• wild bird poaching
• single-use plastic carry-out bags
