What’s So Bad About Other Labels?

Other brands of Direct Thermal Labels use chemicals that are bad for the environment and hazardous to our health.  The following types of chemicals are NOT used in RevealPrint, but do exists in other brands:

BPS/BPS

Traditional direct thermal labels are produced using leuco dye and a developer (color former), which is often BPA/BPS.

Japan and Europe banned BPA in 2001 because of its potential negative health effects on humans, such as hormones, metabolism, and other bodily systems.

BPA/BPS are commonly found on coated receipt paper, as well as a lot of plastics including reusable water bottles and baby bottles. Costco Canada has committed to stop using BPA/BPS coated receipt paper.

California’s Prop 65 recommends that ALL thermal paper have no added BPA and ensure BPA content was below 20 ppm. It also requires that all products that do contain BPA be clearly labeled on the products to help keep water resources from being contaminated.

Pergafast® 201

Some other manufacturers offer phenol-free versions of direct thermal materials, but they are not all created equal.  Some contain Pergafast® 201. According to a report published by the EPA in 2015, Pergafast® is a moderate hazard to reproductive and developmental human health. It is also highly toxic to aquatic organisms and may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment. Any chemical that ships with the GHS pictogram of a dead fish on the side of the container is probably not a great option.

Recycling Hazard

Other direct thermal receipts and labels should not be recycled. Due to the potential environmental and human health hazards, their chemicals may find their way into the water supply and can contaminate recycled paper products downstream.

Solution: RevealPrint does not contain these chemicals and can easily be recycled.
