Solving: An RFID Label Application
I had an customer call and said that they are having a problem with their current RFID label supplier and asked if I could help them out. After listening to their pain points, there were many challenges to this application, one being that the RFID inlay from Texas Instruments was being obsoleted, two, the label size was too large for the recessed area it was being applied to and thirdly, the adhesive needed to be stronger. They were having issues with the labels not sticking as well as they would like.
Getting the correct adhesive was not an issue for us. The labels were being applied to HDPE bottles, so i knew what adhesive would be a great fit. The challenge was getting the inlays inserted into the label stock. The inlays were slightly smaller than the label size. The solution was to use a very high tech laser die cutter to die cut these labels and not damage the chips.
I just happen to be at the plant in California at the same time my labels were running, so I got to see them being made on press and then moved on the laser die cutter to be finished. I was very impressed as to how this label job was run and all of the specialized equipment used in the process.
What you are seeing in my videos, and i guess I am no videographer, is the continuous roll of label stock with the RFID tags inserted going through a laser die cutting machine. All you see is a quick burst of the laser firing and a puff of smoke, at that point the label is then cut out of the label stock. The next station that the labels proceeded to (next video) is the waste being removed and then being rewound. It was a real thrill to see these machines run, especially because it was for one of my customers. The customer was thrilled with the end results, they were able to make their production run without having to replace labels on the bottles, which not only saved time, but money as well.
