The Challenge: Outdoor Labeling with Direct Thermal Mobile Printers

Our customer needed a label that could withstand harsh outdoor conditions but still work with their existing direct thermal mobile printers. Traditionally, direct thermal printers don’t use ribbons, but the customer application requires the durability of a thermal transfer label. On top of that, the workers who applied these labels were wearing gloves, making it difficult to peel the labels from the liner.

The Innovative Solution: Thermaflex with a 1/2″ Tab

We proposed Thermaflex, an incredible label/ribbon combination that allows direct thermal printers to function like thermal transfer printers. This hybrid solution not only ensured the labels would hold up in outdoor conditions but also provided the durability of a thermal transfer print without requiring new printer hardware.

To solve the issue of workers struggling with the label liner while wearing gloves, we designed the labels with a 1/2″ tab at the front. This thoughtful adjustment made it easy for workers to lift the label even with gloves on, significantly improving their workflow. You can see how seamlessly this works in the video demonstration.
