Printing pharmaceutical labels is crucial to the entire industry. A proper labeling solution can avoid many common labeling errors. This can include software, automation, and on-demand printing capabilities.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates prescription and over-the-counter medications. There are strict pharmaceutical labeling requirements that all companies must follow. Labeling and packaging issues can literally be a matter of life and death for people. So, proper labeling is crucial.

Printing Pharmaceutical Labels: 3 Common Types
Different types of pharmaceutical labels have their own requirements. Below are three of the most common types of pharmaceutical labels.
#1. Professional Package Inserts (PPI)
A professional package insert is the most common way to display information about a product or drug. The intended readers are both patients and the person prescribing or recommending it.
This type of label includes:
- the official description of the drug
- what it’s used for
- who should take this medication
- possible adverse side effects
- specific instructions for certain people (for example, pregnant women, children, etc.)
- general safety information
NOTE: Any promotional branding and advertising must be consistent with the information displayed on the PPI label.
#2. FDA-Approved Medication Guides
Medication guides are sometimes referred to as a Patient Package Insert. This should not be confused with the PPI described above. The FDA- approved patient labeling is specifically intended for the patient.
This type of label is often perforated so it can be torn off and given to the patient to read. It typically includes medication guides and instructions for use.
NOTE: A medication guide is not the same thing as patient counseling information.
The FDA determines which medications require a medication guide. Typically, these are the ones that may pose a significant health concern. The FDA is also quite clear about the fact that these labels must:
- be legible
- be written in non-technical, easily understood language
- contain the foundation of information used in other parts of the pharmaceutical packaging
In other words, patients’ must be able to access the information easily, understand it, and refer back to it when necessary.
#3. Drug Facts Labels
Drug facts labels are found on the back of over-the-counter medications. They explain how the drug is used and typically include:
- use and relevant warnings
- active and inactive ingredients
- symptoms it can help to treat
- possible side effects
- conditions in which a consumer should not take the drug
- specific directions
- any other relevant information.
