What is Flexible Packaging?
Flexible packaging is any package or any part of a package whose shape can be readily changed. Common examples of flexible packaging are bags and pouches. It could also be a shrink wrap sleeve on a jar, can or bottle. Usually you print directly onto the package.
Flexible packaging eliminates the need for:
- Labels
- Bottles or cans
- Caps and neck bands or other closures
- Rigid Containers
This has a significant impact on total cost of the product when considering the supply chain and per foot storage costs.
Flexible Packaging Reduces Shipping Costs
Flexible packages can be boxed more efficiently, use less space, and have less weight capacity during shipping. Small packages means less waste. Flexible packaging can often be recycled. It usually requires less time to decompose in a landfill as well.
Affordable Short Runs for Small Businesses
Today’s digital equipment can produce high quality, affordable, short runs. This allows small businesses to compete with the same standard of packaging as larger companies. Some examples include:
- Shrink Sleeves for Craft Beverages (smaller batches and special editions)
- Medical Marijuana and CBD products
- Snack Foods
- Pet Treats

Additional Advantages of Flexible Packaging
If you aren’t convinced yet to find out more about flexible packaging, here are some more reasons.
- No more 2 step operation for finished packages
- Purchasing has to keep track of fewer SKUs
- Marketing has less items to update
- Warehouse space savings
- Transportation savings
- Quality Control has less product to verify compliance
A great way to label bottles
- A difference in weight of up to 193 grams depending on glass or plastic bottles vs. flexible pouch
- Transportation costs significantly decrease
- Depending on the size and structure of the bottle you could see 7, 9, or 26 truckloads of unfilled bottles = 1 truckload of pouches
- Breakage with glass
For Boxes, Labels, Closures, Rigid Containers etc.
- No more 2 step operation (labels or shrink sleeves need to be applied)
- Fewer items that marketing has to update
- No more cracked caps, skewed glue joints on boxes
